Subscript Generator

A free subscript generator that turns numbers and letters into lowered Unicode characters, for chemical formulas like H₂O and CO₂ or math indexes like xₙ. The result is plain text, so it pastes into posts, chat, and most fields without formatting options, though some fields restrict which characters they accept.

Example result

H₂O

How to Use the Subscript Generator

Type or paste into the box and the subscript version appears below. Switch to Superscript to raise text instead. For a formula, convert only the numbers: type 2, copy ₂, and place it after the H in H₂O.

Which Characters Have Subscript Forms

Each subscript character is a separate Unicode code point, and the set is smaller than superscript:

  • Digits: all ten, ₀₁₂₃₄₅₆₇₈₉.
  • Symbols: ₊ ₋ ₌ ₍ ₎.
  • Lowercase letters: a, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v, and x (ₐ ₑ ₕ ᵢ ⱼ ₖ ₗ ₘ ₙ ₒ ₚ ᵣ ₛ ₜ ᵤ ᵥ ₓ), plus a subscript schwa (ₔ).
  • Not available: b, c, d, f, g, and q, and no capital letters at all.

Unicode 18.0, the current version, added subscript w, y, and z. Because they are so new, this generator leaves w, y, and z unchanged rather than relying on font support for them. Everything here is listed in the Unicode Character Database.

Chemistry Formulas

Chemistry is where subscript earns its keep, because the numbers in a formula are almost always subscript digits, which Unicode fully covers:

  • Water: H₂O
  • Carbon dioxide: CO₂
  • Glucose: C₆H₁₂O₆
  • Sulfuric acid: H₂SO₄

Element symbols stay full size; only the counts are lowered. For ion charges, combine both modes: SO₄²⁻ uses subscript for the 4 and superscript for the charge.

Math and Other Uses

Subscript marks indexes and sequence terms in math (aₙ, xᵢ, x₁ + x₂) and base notation (1010₂). If you are writing in Word, Google Docs, or HTML, use the built-in subscript formatting or the tag instead. It works on every character, though screen readers may not announce the lowered position, so make sure the meaning is clear without it.
